It’s New Year’s Eve.
We made it through another year and the promise of a new one is on the horizon. Historically New Year’s Eve is not my favorite holiday, although I do love the promise of a fresh start. But quiet, cozy gatherings writing, building vision boards or escaping to a cabin in the woods are a little more my speed than sparkly attire and cocktail lounges. To each their own!
But for my fellow introverts, grab a cup of tea and your favorite pen, snuggle up with your coziest blanket, and let’s talk about writing practice.
It’s super simple (all you need is a pen and paper). You can write anytime, and any place. It’s a really good way to get to know the inner workings of your mind. And perhaps most importantly, you don’t have to be good at writing to get the benefits of writing.
Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones, often says, “you are free to write the worst junk in the world. So now that that’s out of the way, you’re free to just create what you will.” A very important kind of freedom IMO.
Here are a few rules of writing practice to help you get started:
Keep your hand moving. Don’t think. Just follow your mind.
Lose Control. My favorite and arguably most important rule. Say what you want to say. Not what is polite or what you should.
Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation or grammar. Don’t know how to spell weird … we don’t care.
Go for the jugular. whatever comes up, let it out.
Be specific. Not fruit but apple. Not car but Cadillac. Show, don’t tell.
As 2024 comes to an end, and the promise of a fresh start and new beginnings are just around the corner, here are 25 reflection questions I’ve enjoyed lately that I think you might enjoy too.
